Transport, jobs at heart of super city debate

Updated at 10:46 am on 13 September 2010

Transport and jobs have been at the heart of the Auckland super city mayoral debate, broadcast live on Morning Report on Monday morning.

Contenders John Banks, Len Brown and Andrew Williams took part in the debate chaired by Morning Report presenter Geoff Robinson at AUT University in Auckland.

Mr Banks says he is committed to ensuring the completion of a CBD rail loop that will allow trains to move through Britomart Station and out to the west.

Mr Brown, the current Mayor of Manukau, says he is also sympathetic to rail and is promising a rail link to the North Shore.

Under his leadership, he says a second crossing to the Shore will be completed in 15 years.

Mr Williams says the crossing should consist of four tunnels - two for vehicles and two for trains - and there should be no more debate over possible crossing options.

Listen to the candidates answer questions about their vision for the city
