Job numbers at new Auckland Council still under wraps

Updated at 8:15 am on 14 September 2010

It is still unclear how many jobs will be lost in Auckland's super city council amalgamation.

The new Auckland Council comes into being on 1 November, but the council chief executive and the agency creating it, both say they do not know how many staff it will employ.

Six months ago Auckland's eight councils collectively employed 8200 personnel.

Material from the Auckland Transition Agency several months ago suggested up to 700 fewer jobs were provided for, but the agency dismissed the figures at the time as unreliable.

The Auckland Transition Agency says it will not comment until most of the recruiting is completed this month.
