Greener Auckland urged by business group

A group of large businesses has sent Auckland mayoral candidates a wish list of clean, green projects that it says could spruce up the city and improve the quality of life.

The Business Council for Sustainable Development is suggesting several new measures, including the introduction of traffic congestion charges at peak times.

It suggests motorists could drive into the city in free lanes as they do now, or pay a few dollars and join an express lane.

It says similar schemes overseas have reduced congestion by up to 25%.

The business council is also seeking an overhaul of Auckland's recycling system.
