Dunedin in debt crisis, says mayoral candidate

Updated at 4:49 pm on 24 September 2010

A Dunedin mayoral candidate says the city is saddled with too much debt and costs will have to be cut.

During a mayoral debate on Morning Report on Friday, incumbent mayor Peter Chin said he is proud of the tough decisions the council has made, including going ahead with the city's new stadium.

Mr Chin said he wants a third term as mayor so he can see the stadium project completed.

However, his main rival, Dunedin City Councillor Dave Cull said the debt from the stadium will create problems for the city in the future.

Mr Chin said the debt from the stadium is accounted for in the city's annual plan.
