Voter interest in elections varies

Updated at 4:49 pm on 24 September 2010

A survey suggests Aucklanders are more interested than other New Zealanders in next month's local elections - but that many of them are still not certain to vote.

The UMR Research poll finds that election interest is the lowest in Otago at 64% and highest in Auckland at 79%.

However, only 63% in Auckland say they are certain to take part.

This compares with Christchurch, where three-quarters of residents questioned before the earthquake were interested in the elections and 69% intended to vote.

Almost half of all voters say they have a good idea of what their councillors and mayor do.

The online poll of 1000 adults was carried out in the last week of August and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1%.
