Final council meeting at Waitakere

Updated at 3:46 pm on 30 September 2010

Waitakere City Council members have held their final meeting.

Eight councils in Auckland will form the new Auckland Council on 1 November.

Waitakere has championed an 'Eco City' cause under its mayor of 18 years, Bob Harvey.

As the lights dimmed, the council crest was lifted off the wall.

The council's copy of the Treaty of Waitangi also taken down and handed to an executive from the Auckland Council.

Janet Clews, the council's longest-serving member, says the farewell on Wednesday night brought mixed emotions.

Looking on was Tim Shadbolt, who ousted by Assid Corban as mayor when Waitakere City was formed 21 years ago. He in turn was defeated by Mr Harvey.

Mr Shadbolt said local body amalgamation would not dim the "Westie spirit'.

Ninety-three council personnel earlier received redundancy letters from the transition agency setting up the new council.
