Dunedin's new mayor says one of the big issues facing the city is its debt.
Sitting mayor Peter Chin has been beaten by a margin of 8000 votes by Dave Cull, a TV presenter and author of lifestyle and home improvement books.
Mr Cull says fixing the city's debt burden, exacerbated by the new stadium, will be his main priority.
He says Dunedin already had enormous committments before the stadium project, which he described as the "straw that broke the camel's back".
