Women footballers suffer second loss

8:44 am on 29 July 2012

A goal in the final minutes has denied the New Zealand women's football team an upset against the fifth-ranked Brazilian side at the Olympics.

New Zealand held the score to 0-0 for most of the match but Brazil managed to find the goal in the last five minutes, to win 1-0.

The Football Ferns pressed Brazil's playmakers in midfield with numbers to reduce their influence and played quickly when in possession to get through Brazil's tight man-marking system.

New Zealand coach Tony Readings says the team is happy with the performance at their second pool game but disappointed not to get the result they needed.

The loss is their second at the London Games, following a 1-0 defeat by Great Britain.

In their pool match on Saturday, Great Britain defeated Cameroon 3-0.

In other results, Japan and Sweden drew 0-0, Canada beat South Africa 3-0, the United States defeated Colombia 3-0 and France beat North Korea 5-0.
