New Zealand swimmer Lauren Boyle just missed a bronze medal in the women's 800 metre freestyle final in London on Friday.

She came fourth with a personal best time of 8 minutes and 22.72 seconds.

The event was won by Katie Ledecky of the United States.

Mireia Belmonte Garcia of Spain won silver and Rebecca Adlington of Britain won bronze.

Adlington won two gold medals in Beijing four years ago. She finished third in the 400m event this time as well.

Ledecky, 15, is the youngest member of the American team.

Garcia's medal is her second silver of the Games.

After the race, Boyle, 24, said she was thrilled with the result which proved she could compete with the best.
