Despite not winning a medal, swimmer Lauren Boyle has been one of New Zealand's standout performers at the London Olympics.

Boyle proved what she is capable of by finishing fourth in the women's 800 metres freestyle final on Saturday.

She broke her own New Zealand record by three seconds to finish just two seconds behind Rebecca Adlington, who won gold at the previous Olympics.

Boyle says fourth place signifies how far she has developed as a swimmer.

"I don't want New Zealand to think that I'm someone who's satisfied with fourth place," she says, "but for the amount that I've improved over the last year and how much I've improved my rankings and times, I'm really happy with that performance."
