New Zealand's Brent Newdick has finished 12th overall in the Olympic decathlon.

Ashton Eaton of the United States won the gold medal with a total of 8,869 points, while teammate Trey Hardee took the silver.

Cuban Leonel Suarez added another bronze to the one he won at the Beijing Games in 2008.

Newdick went into the final event in 14th place and a seventh in the 1500m run pushed him up two spots.

Newdick earlier threw 59.82 in the javelin, the ninth event, to move from 16th to 14th overall.

He began Thursday 16th out of a field of 27, but slipped to 20th after a disappointing run in the 110m hurdles, finishing seventh.

However, he climbed back up to 16th overall after posting the fifth best distance in the discus of 46.15m and clearing 4.7m in the pole vault on Thursday.

The 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m events were held on Wednesday.
