Wellington swimmer Mary Fisher has won her fourth medal and her first gold at the Paralympic Games in London.

The 19-year-old set a world record in winning the 200 metre individual medley in 2 minutes 46.91 seconds.

Daniela Shulte from Germany won silver and Amber Thomas from Canada won bronze.

Fisher had already won two silvers and a bronze at the games.

Paralympics New Zealand's High Performance Director, Malcolm Humm, says Mary Fisher's performance has been among the highlights of the Games.

He says it's been a successful Games for the New Zealand team, which was aiming for 18 medals, and came away with 17, six of them gold.
