Spring Creek mine operating again

The West Coast's largest coal mine has begun a staged resumption of mining after closing two weeks ago due to safety concerns.

The closure of Spring Creek was ordered by the Department of Labour after three safety incidents, including a generator fire and two system-alert failures relating to fans.

The mine's operator, Solid Energy, kept the mine shut even after the department said it could reopen in order to introduce new safety measures.

The state-owned company says the mine will begin full operations by the end of March.
