12:50 pm on 14 August 2008

Police in Auckland are investigating the unexplained death of a new-born girl.

She was born at a home in Stanmore Bay in Whangaparaoa early on Wednesday morning.

Police say a woman in her 40s called an ambulance for medical help later in the morning.

A police spokesperson says it later became apparent at the North Shore Hospital that she had just given birth.

The police were called at about 2pm on Wednesday and found the dead baby at the woman's house.

At this stage, the death is being treated as unexplained, and not a homicide. Police are waiting for post mortem results.
