Driving conditions improve, roads reopen

8:00 am on 18 August 2008

The Transport Authority says alpine roads appear to be through the worst of the high country snow and driving conditions are beginning to improve.

A series of nightly snow falls since last Wednesday have forced the closure of many state highways and mountain passes.

But all North Island roads are now open, including the Desert Road.

In the South, the Transport Authority, says the only remaining road closure is State Highway 94 from Te Anau to Milford Sound, and it will not open again until the risk of avalanches has passed.

Chains are essential for State Higway 80 between Mt Cook and Pukaki, and the Crown Range.
