The Auckland high school principal whose students died while river canyoning says their classmates need to return to the site of the tragedy.

Six students and a teacher from Auckland's Elim Christian College died in April when they were swept down the Mangatepopo River near Tongariro National Park.

The college has decided that next February pupils will again have the opportunity to attend the leadership programme at the Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre.

Principal Murray Burton says there have been discussions about how soon is too soon to return, but the school has decided the centre is still a leader in outdoor education.
