No U-turn sign recommended after motorcyclist killed

The Wellington coroner has recommended the Ministry of Transport put up a sign telling drivers not to take a U-turn on a hill near Lower Hutt, where a man died in a motorcycle accident.

David Piercy, from New Plymouth, died in 2009 when he was hit by a ute making the turn on a dangerous part of the Haywards Hill on State Highway 58.

In a ruling released Monday coroner Ian Smith said the driver was careless making the move in a dangerous location with limited sight of oncoming traffic.

He said the ministry should consider installing a sign on the hill at the point where people may be tempted to make a U-turn.
