A 27-year-old Christchurch man has been charged with attempted murder and injuring with intent.

The charges arise out of two stabbings in the city on 15 March.

One man suffered multiple stab wounds and a woman delivery driver was also kidnapped and injured.

Their alleged assailant is in Christchurch Hospital after being shot in the wrist and shoulder by police.

In a special court hearing at the hospital on Tuesday, he was also accused of unlawfully detaining the two injured people.

Judge Paul Kellar granted temporary suppression of the man's identity, remanding him in custody to reappear next week.
