Peters' hearing compared to Salem Witch trials

7:55 am on 21 August 2008

Winston Peters has likened his treatment at hearing of a Parliament's Privileges Committee to the Salem Witch trials.

In a speech to Grey Power on Wednesday, Mr Peters said it was more like the Spanish Inquisition, than a reasoned hearing by the so-called highest court in the land.

Mr Peters went on to say he would not have been surprised to see a stake with dry wood stacked around it, saying the hearing appeared to have no rules.

The committee is considering whether Mr Peters should have declared a donation of $100,000 towards the legal costs of an electoral petition in 2006 from expatriate businesman Owen Glenn, on the register of pecuniary interests.

Mr Peters maintains he could not have declared it because he was only told about it last month.

Green Party co-leader Russel Norman says Mr Peters' latest comments are absurd and are typical of the way he's approached questions about donations, making himself out as a victim.

ACT Party leader Rodney Hide agrees and says the New Zealand First leader is getting more and more desperate.
