Trampers being guided out of forest near Te Kuiti

A search and rescue team is guiding a group of trampers out of a forest near Te Kuiti.

The six trampers aged in their 60s and 70s alerted police on Tuesday that they were lost and facing rough weather conditions in the Wharerino Forest Park.

Ground teams and a helicopter helped find the group in the forest about 10.30pm as they headed for a nearby hut.

Senior Sergeant Rob Van Kalken, of Te Kuiti, says the rugged terrain and worsening weather conditions means the walk out is taking longer than usual.

The experienced trampers are in good health and should be out later on Wednesday afternoon, he says.
