Police investigating the death of a homeless man found floating in Auckland's Viaduct harbour, have revealed his ankles and wrists were bound.

The body of 52-year-old John Wallace was found on Sunday, with the police saying he was alive when he entered the water.

The head of the investigation, Detective Senior Sergeant Mark McHattie, says he was bound with bungee cords.

The police are now appealing for sightings of Mr Wallace who they say was transient and was last seen in the suburbs of Epsom, Grafton and Newton.

They say he had trouble seeing at times and walked with a distinctive shuffle, caused by illness.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark McHattie says there were no signs of injury on Mr Wallace's body that would have resulted from an assault.
