The Otago University Students Association hopes a glass ban will reduce injuries at what looks like being a big street party on Saturday night.
Nearly 10,000 people have indicated on a social network site that they will attend the keg party in Hyde Street, near Otago University - though the final number is expected to be smaller than that.
A similar party last year packed the street, so this time the area closed off to traffic has been extended.
Association president Logan Edgar says last year many people got cut feet from broken glass and he hopes that having only cans or plastic bottles will make life easier for everyone.
