Businesses fear losing out under rates changes

The Auckland Chamber of Commerce says proposed changes to the city's business rating system will do more harm than good.

Auckland Council wants to bring the rates charged by the city's eight former councils into a single system.

It says that means some businesses' rates will rise and some will fall, but the plan will lead to an average increase of 3.6%.

Under the proposal, the council says, more than 11,000 busineses will receive a rates reduction.

However the Chamber of Commerce says many of the 180,000 businesses in Auckland will be subject to significant increases.
