Overstayer entry scheme to be extended

6:19 am on 23 August 2008

The Department of Labour is looking at extending a pilot scheme that will allow overstayers to reapply for entry to New Zealand.

It recently completed a small trial that encouraged people staying in the country illegally to come forward.

The department has set up what it calls information clinics so overstayers can come forward without feeling threatened.

Participants who leave the country on their own will be able to re-apply for entry.

A person who is forced to leave, rather than leaving voluntarily, is generally not permitted to return for five years.
