$2m price tag and rising for Waioeka Gorge

The Transport Agency says clearing a large slip that has closed State Highway 2 at Waioeka Gorge, south of Opotiki, has already cost $2 million.

The highway, connecting Gisborne and Opotiki, has been closed since the start of the month because of the large slip.

Associate Transport Minister Chris Tremain and representatives of local councils visited the slip site on Tuesday.

Transport Agency principal asset manager Nigel D'Ath says the amount already spent could double because there is still a lot of work to do.
