Police are seeking help from the public after an incident at a primary school when a boy was lured away by a teenager.

The 10-year-old was able to run back to his classroom and raise the alarm on Tuesday.

Police say it appears the boy had left his classroom at Hamilton West Primary to go to the toilet when he was approached by a teenage male.

They say he was then led to some nearby trees and a length of chain was produced that he thought might be used to tie him up.

Police say it appears two members of the public walking nearby disturbed the teenager, who then ran off.

The offender is described as Pakeha, aged about 15.

Police would like to speak to the couple walking by and anyone else who may have noticed someone acting suspiciously in or around the school on Tuesday morning.
