At least a dozen houses are to be demolished in Manukau City for a major arterial roading project.

Manukau City Council has chosen three options for a 14km, $100 million route linking Drury - Flat Bush via Mill and Redoubt roads.

At least 12,000 vehicles use the roads each day - that's projected to grow to at least 25,000 when the route is widened to four lanes.

Council transport manager Chris Freke says affected property owners are currently being consulted and property purchases are due to start next year.

while only a small number of properties will need to be fully removed for the project, He says it will need parts of up to a further 70 properties.

Another 100 houses will have to have their driveways realingned.

Construction along the route is due to start in the next 10 years.
