Police say they're on track to reduce crime

Police say they are on track to meet their aim of reducing crime by 13% by 2014.

They say there was a 5.6% reduction in crime in last year's statistics and figures to be released soon will show they are on track to meet their crime reduction target.

Deputy Commissioner of Operations Mike Bush has told Parliament's law and order select committee that they are shifting their focus from purely crime response, to crime prevention.

Mr Bush said individual police are measuring success less on the numbers of people arrested but on the crimes and tragedies that are averted.
