The cost of sending a letter will rise later this year.

New Zealand Post says the stamp for a standard size letter sent within New Zealand will rise from 60 cents to 70 cents from 1 July.

Stamp prices last increased in late 2010, when the goods and services tax (GST) rose to 15%.

New Zealand Post says it will also increase postage rates for international courier and some international business letter services by between 2.5% and 5% from the beginning of July.

People are sending fewer letters due to the increased use of email and other electronic communication, and New Zealand Post says the cost of transporting, processing and delivering letters has steadily risen.
