The Overseas Investment Office is allowing American filmmaker James Cameron to extend his Wairarapa property.

The director of films such as Titanic and Avatar can now add another 10 hectares to his property on Western Lake Road, south of Featherston.

In December, the office granted approval for Mr Cameron to buy properties in the area totalling more than 1000 hectares.

In a decision on the extension, the office says he and his family will use the land to live on and for a working farm.

It says Mr Cameron plans to live in New Zealand indefinitely.
