Wait for resolution angers students at liquidated provider

Students at failed IT training company the Computer Power Institute say government agencies should have acted sooner to protect their interests.

Whitireia Community Polytechnic and Wellington Institute of Technology are developing a rescue package for students of the institute, which went into liquidation two weeks ago.

The institute had 750 students at campuses in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

Computer Power students say the rescue package is a relief, although they had two weeks of uncertainty while they waited to find out what would happen.

The Association of Private Education Providers is keeping a close eye on the situation.

It says private sector funding is capped at $150 million a year and Computer Power's allocation of $2.5 million should be redistributed to other private providers.

Liquidators say Computer Power has substantial debts, including more than $8 million owed to the Inland Revenue Department.
