Faumuina hits back at critics

New Zealand discus thrower Beatrice Faumuina has hit back at critics who questioned her loyalty to the Olympic team in Beijing after she sought to return home early - a request turned down by management.

Faumuina, who finished 28th in the discus, failing to qualify for the final, eventually flew into Auckland with the rest of the team on Wednesday morning.

Chef de mission Dave Currie said at the time that he was disappointed Faumuina had requested an early release from Beijing rather than wanting to stay to support teammates.

But Faumuina says the criticism is harsh and there is no way she would work hard to qualify if she was not a team player.
