Felling of park trees not wanted

3:12 pm on 3 April 2012

A Whangarei woman is making an 11th-hour appeal to stop the felling of old trees in a city park.

The Transport Agency wants to cut down 11 big trees on the boundary of Mander Park to widen State Highway 1 and improve traffic flows.

Mary McDonald is part of a group campaigning to save the trees and says the agency and Whangarei District Council have shown no regard for local feelings on the issue.

The district council says removing the trees is necessary to improve road conditions and it is planting more trees in the park to replace the old ones.
