Close to 50 breaches have occurred since rules requiring taxi cabs to have cameras and emergency alarms came into force in August last year.

Close to 50 breaches have occurred since rules requiring taxi cabs to have cameras and emergency alarms came into force in August last year.

The Transport Agency says 46 of 6500 taxi cabs in 16 cities have been found as a result of thousands of spot checks to be not complying with the new rules.

Offences include emergency alarm systems not working, cameras found with the lens cap on, cameras not working or cameras pointing in the wrong direction and recording what is outside the cab.

The Taxi Federation says it is disappointing so many breaches have been found.

Executive director Tim Reddish says some will be deliberate, which is stupid because the cameras are there for their safety.

The rules were introduced following the deaths of two taxi drivers and a number of serious assaults.

The requirements come into force in May in earthquake-hit Christchurch, which was granted an exemption.
