NZ soldier dies in Afghanistan

A New Zealand soldier has died in Afghanistan.

The Defence Force says the man's death was not the result of combat, but is providing no more details and has not named him.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning (local time) while the soldier was serving with the Provincial Reconstruction Team at Forward Patrol Base Romero in Bamyan province.

The soldier was taken to hospital where he died. His next-of-kin are being informed.

The Defence Force says it is saddened by the loss and an investigation into the circumstances of the death has begun.

Defence Minister Jonathan Coleman says the Government offers its condolences to the soldier's family and friends.
