The New Zealand Blood Service has received a glowing report from the Office of the Auditor General.

Parliament's health select committee heard the service relies on a constant group of about 120,000 donors a year. It is safe, efficient and well run.

The Office said the blood is used by more than 40,000 people a year.

Blood products are provided to the health sector on a cost recovery basis.
