Female bishop delivers first sermon

4:50 pm on 31 August 2008

New Zealand's second woman bishop delivered her first sermon on Sunday morning in Christchurch.

Victoria Matthews of Canada was installed as Bishop of Christchurch on Saturday afternoon.

She missed being elected Primate of Canada last year.

The bishop is an advisor to the worldwide Anglican Communion and was part of the Windsor Continuation Group, charged with maintaining church unity after divisions over same sex marriage and gay clergy.

Bishop Matthews started her official duties on Sunday with her first sermon at the Christchurch cathedral.
