The New Zealand men's curling team is a step closer to the playoff rounds of the world men's curling championship being held in Basel, Switzerland.

New Zealand on Thursday beat the favourites, Canada, who were unbeaten in their previous nine games, and finished equal fourth with Sweden after the round robin.

New Zealand and Sweden play a tiebreaker, with the winner securing the fourth playoff berth and a meeting against Norway on Saturday.

Canada and Scotland will meet in the other playoff.
