Wellington council proposing 4% rates increase

9:55 pm on 6 April 2012

A 4% increase in rates is proposed in the Wellington City Council's long-term plan.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says the focus for the next 10 years is on investing in the capital's economy.

Ms Wade-Brown says the council is mindful of the current economic climate and of significant immediate financial pressures, such as the need to fund earthquake strengthening work.

The mayor says the council will also consult on an option to reduce expenditure on council buildings, parks and sportsfields over the next 10 years by $26 million.

Public consultation opens on 16 April. It will also include how to manage big tourist attractions including wildlife sanctuary Zelandia, the Wellington Zoo, the Botanic Garden and Otari-Wilton's Bush.
