A man has appeared in Gisborne District Court charged with sexual violation and kidnapping, after handing himself in to police.
Two teenage tourists from England were parked near the Tokomaru Bay Sports Club, when the man, 29, forced his way into their campervan early on Friday.
Police have described the assault, which took place over a period of two hours, as a sickening ordeal.
Detective Sergeant Kevin Ford told Checkpoint on Monday the man knew he had to turn himself in.
Mr Ford says the accused was remanded in custody and could face further charges.
