Treaty claim deadline passes

Updated at 8:05 am on 2 September 2008

About 2000 new claims under the Treaty of Waitangi were received by the Waitangi Tribunal by midnight on Monday.

The Government set a deadline of 1 September in 2005 for claims to be lodged, with the aim of resolving them all by 2020.

Tribunal staff say they were receiving faxed or e-mailed claims right up until midnight.

The next step is for each claim to be individually assessed, to see whether it meets the criteria required to be registered.

Nearly 1800 new claims have been received since 1 July. Postal submissions closed on Friday.

Waatea News reports more than 500 claims were filed in August.

The final number of claims to the Tribunal will be issued on Wednesday.
