A man appeared in the Manukau District Court on Tuesday charged with murder following a killing in Papatoetoe early on Sunday.

John Maeva, 25, was shot three times outside his home at about 12.20am on Sunday. Two of the wounds were to his head.

The accused, 31, was remanded in custody until later in September. His name was suppressed.

In court, members of the slain man's family shouted at him. Two security guards were posted in front of them.

Detective Senior Sergeant Peter Jones says the family knew the accused, but will not give details of the relationship. He says the family is now preparing for Mr Maeva's tangi.
