Human Rights Tribunal hears disability case

11:39 am on 3 September 2008

A group of parents with disabled adult children are taking their case against the Ministry of Health to the Human Rights Review Tribunal.

The group says the Ministry pays for caregivers to look after adult children with high disability needs, but will not pay family members who carry out the same role.

They claim they are being discriminated against because of their family status, and that that breaches the Human Rights Act.

The case began in Auckland on Wednesday, and is due to run for five weeks.
