NZ test fires missiles at sea

8:02 am on 6 September 2008

The Air Force and Navy have practised firing live missiles from the Defence Force's Seasprite helicopters.

It was the first time the 'Maverick' air-to-surface missiles had been fired since they were introduced to service in 2001.

Commander Jason Haggart says two missiles were fired at two targets at sea east of Great Barrier Island on Friday morning.

He says it was a successful operation, although tests and checks will now highlight any changes which could be made.

Commander Haggart says the test proves the Air Force and Navy can destroy a surface target.

He says the government decides the circumstances in which the missiles are used.
