End to NZ ties with Syria wanted by group

5:19 pm on 13 April 2012

The Syrian Solidarity New Zealand group says the Government should cut any political or trading ties it has with Syria.

Spokesperson Ali Akil told Radio New Zealand's Morning Report programme on Friday that New Zealand can also send humanitarian and medical aid.

He said New Zealand has already lobbied against Syrian allies such as Russia, but should also apply pressure on China.

A ceasefire in Syria officially began at 6am (local time) on Thursday, but both sides report a growing number of breaches.
