Schools where sex offender worked named

Two North Island schools that employed a convicted sex offender are fighting to keep their identities a secret, while the names of four others have been released publicly.

Rangitahi College, Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Koutu, Stratford Community Learning Centre and Matapihi Primary School employed Te Rito Miki, 41, for stretches over a two-year period after he used false details to get work.

The schools can be named after interim name suppression lapsed on Friday.

Two other schools, both in Auckland, have asked for permanent name suppression in the Auckland District Court on Friday.

Their lawyer said one of the schools fears that students will face emotional harm if it is named.

She said rumours abounded after a wave of publicity in February this year and naming the school would cause renewed alarm among students because of further media coverage.

The reasons put forward by the other school about why its name should be kept secret have been suppressed.

A representative from Fairfax Media opposed the applications, saying the schools should be named in the interests of transparency and open justice.

Judge Philippa Sinclair reserved her decision on whether the schools should get permanent name suppression until 17 May.

Miki will be sentenced in May on seven charges of using a false CV and a birth certificate and four counts of breaching an extended supervision order.

A government inquiry into how he gained work at the schools is expected to be released in June.
