Teen kakas run amok at wildlife sanctuary

8:46 am on 6 September 2008

Teenage kaka have gone on a rampage in the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary in Wellington, vandalising their own nesting boxes.

The birds have used their beaks to tear the doors off more than half the boxes put out for them over the winter.

Department of Conservation officer Matt Robertson says it's a level of destruction not seen previously in kaka, and he attributes it to juvenile birds who are at a loose end.
