Blenheim meet to oppose Salmon farm

3:16 pm on 17 April 2012

A public meeting is being held in Blenheim on Tuesday night to discuss appeals against a company's plan to expand their salmon farms in the Marlborough Sounds.

New Zealand King Salmon, which currently farms in the Sounds, wants to create a further nine farms in the region, but needs local legislation to change to do so.

An independent board of inquiry is likely to hear the appeal in August, and will have the final say on whether the farms will go ahead.

The Marlborough District Council and lobby group Sustain our Sounds are the main opposition to the plan.

Sustain our Sounds chair Danny Boulton says the meeting is intended to encourage locals to get behind their appeal.
