Tougher laws on snow tyres possible next year

12:21 pm on 6 September 2008

Transport Minister Harry Duynhoven says new laws banning wrongly fitted or badly worn snow tyres could be introduced by the middle of next year.

The incorrect use of snow tyres has been linked with the deaths of seven people on the roads in the past three years.

Mr Duynhoven says he is trying to hasten changes to warrant of fitness rules which would ban the mixing of snow tyres with conventional tyres.

He is also seeking an increase in the minimum tread depth of snow and mud tyres from one and a half millimetres to four millimetres.
