An aviation commentator says it is crucial Air New Zealand has full passenger loads for its new, lower fares across the Tasman.

Air New Zealand on Friday announced an average 15% drop in its flights from all main centres to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

This follows significant price cuts announced last month on Air New Zealand's Auckland-Sydney and Auckland-Melbourne routes.

Air New Zealand has spent almost $60 million in upgrading 17 trans-Tasman aircraft.

Commentator Peter Clark says Air New Zealand needs to ensure every plane is full, and make it clear it provides food, drink and entertainment unlike budget carriers.
